(Grammar) Contracted Forms, -ㄴ데요 and -는데요

This contracted form exists to make the word becomes shorter. So if you found this contracted forms, don't ever get blanked. This kind of form are commonly in informal speaking and Korean writing.

  • 보았어요 contracted to 봤어요
  • 에서는 contracted to 에선
  • 이것이 contracted to 이게
  • 그것이 contracted to 그게
  • 저것이 contracted to 저게
  • 이것은 contracted to 이건
and so on..

-ㄴ데요 suggest that the proceeding information carries some extra significance beyond what is stated literally. It follows -이다 (to be) and descriptive verbs.

  • 전데요 It's me
  • 집인데요 This is the house.
  • 안계신데요 (somebody) Is not here right now.
-는데요 has the same meaning with -ㄴ데요, just -는데요 is following all verb roots except '이다'
  • 맞는데요 That's right.
  • 주무시는데요 He/She is sleeping.
  • 들어오시는데요 He/She is coming in.
