Korean Pronounciation

In this lesson, you will learn how to pronounce the consonants and the vowels, combined in syllables or words. Some consonants have several variations which can change according to their positions in the given syllables. In addition to pronunciation, brief instructions on the punctuation and spacing will be also provided.

When a syllable ends with a consonant, the pronunciation of the syllable-final consonant can occur in four ways depending on the final consonant.
Syllable-final Consonants
Pronunciation
ㄱ(G),ㄲ(KK),ㅋ(K)
[ㄱ]
ㅂ(B/P),ㅍ (P),ㅃ(BB)
[ㅂ]
ㄴ(N),ㄹ(R/L),ㅁ(M)
[ㄴ],[ㄹ],[ㅁ]
ㄷ(D),ㅌ(T),ㅅ(S),ㅆ(SS),ㅈ(J),ㅊ(C),ㅎ(H)
[ㄷ]
-When the syllable ends in consonants 'ㄱ, ㅋ, ㄲ', the syllable-final consonant 'ㄱ' is pronounced without an explosion of air.
:
-When the syllable ends in consonants 'ㅂ,ㅍ', the syllable-final consonant is pronounced without an explosion of air. Incidentally, there is no word which ends in the consonant 'ㅃ'.
:
-When the syllable ends in consonants 'ㄷ, ㅌ, ㅅ, ㅆ, ㅈ, ㅊ, ㅎ', or they are followed by consonants, they are pronounced with the representative consonant 'ㄷ' without an explosion. But if they are followed by a vowel, they have their own sound value. Incidentally, there is no word which ends in the consonants 'ㄸ, ㅉ'
:
-When the syllable ends in consonants 'ㄴ,ㄹ,ㅁ,ㅇ', the syllable-final consonant is pronounced with its own sound value. Especially, the 'ㄹ' has two different sounds depending on the position of the syllable. At the syllable-final position, if that syllable is not followed by a vowel starting the next syllable, it has an [l] sound. But if it is followed by a vowel, it has an [r] sound.
